As the Paris air show comes to a close, we reflect on an event that has been vibrant despite the lack of major aircraft orders that have dominated previous shows. Despite the industry’s financial woes, the clouds that had gathered as the show began lifted as the Gulf airlines stamped their authority on Paris, with Qatar and Etihad placing large orders for aircraft and engines respectively on the opening day. Of the major aircraft manufacturers, Airbus has been the main benefactor at the show, receiving large orders from AirAsia X (A350 XWBs), Qatar Airways (A320s), and Wizz Air, which yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding for 50 A320s. In contrast it has been a quiet show for Boeing, despite the continued progress of its 787.
