PVC futures contracts traded in China see a near seven-fold increase in volumes in a fortnight, with prices hitting record highs. Buyers are stunned as US BD producer LyondellBasell nominates a September contract increase of 18 cents/lb. In the media France's Arkema is set to buy Dow Chemical's Clear Lake, Texas, acrylic acid and esters plant and the UCAR Emulsion Systems specialty latex businesses in North America for $50m. Netherlands-based Lyondell Chemical will restart its idled propylene oxide/ styrene monomer (PO/SM) unit in Channelview, Texas, in September due to increased demand. Petrochemical major SABIC signs a 50/50 joint venture with Japan's Mitsubishi Rayon to manufacture methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).
