Spot ABS resins fall by $40-70/tonne as Chinese demand dips ahead of holidays. INEOS NOVA is to permanently close its 90,000 tonne/year polystyrene (PS) plant at Breda in the Netherlands. US new home construction improves again in August. India’s Reliance Industries could have up to 3,000 tonnes of propylene available for export every quarter following the conversion of its Hazira polypropylene (PP) plant to copolymer grade. LyondellBasell confirms it will close its 185,000 tonne/year low density polyethylene (LDPE) unit at Carrington, UK, at the end of the year. Chemical industry mergers and acquisitions slow down, but bankers look for a rebound Switzerland’s Clariant and US-based Huntsman restructure textile chemicals to boost global competitiveness and recharge growth. In the media US-based Dow Chemical to sell its hollow sphere plastic pigment product line to specialty chemicals producer OMNOVA Solutions. Germany’s BASF announces plans to restructure its polyamide 6 production in Europe. Growth in emerging markets will account for 70-80% of future growth in the titanium dioxide industry, says DuPont Titanium Technologies.
